You may have noticed that I didn’t touch on Nassau at all in my last post, A Twist on Cruising. To be honest, I had an extremely difficult time coming up with the words to describe my experience in Nassau. I strive to find and experience authentic local culture when I travel. Unfortunately, we had a difficult time finding this in Nassau.
When you first disembark the cruise ship, you are immediately assaulted with tourism at its finest. We were herded through a faux Caribbean market filled to the brim with tacky souvenirs and shop keepers shouting at us to come into their shop and look around. Once we were able to escape from that market, we wandered into an “authentic” straw market which was anything but.
Rather than continue to follow the herd around the shopping district to the packed beach, my boyfriend and I wandered down the beach and found the city’s old Fort. From there we wandered through a non-touristy part of the town and finally made our way back to a much less packed beach. Here are some of my favorite photos that I took on our little adventure for your viewing pleasure.
And away we went.
