Yeah, okay, so everyone does ‘Throwback Thursday’ right? Here at The Wandering Canucks, we like to get a little more specific at Throw Back to Travelling. Whenever my phone pops up with a photo (via the app Timehop) telling me that 7 years ago today I was in Beijing or 2 years ago today I was in Tokyo, I get that odd mixture of longing, nostalgia and inspiration (especially if I look outside the window during the Canadian Winter). But sometimes it’s nice to reminisce. To get that prompt for that funny story you’d long forgotten. To kickstart you planning the next trip. To reconnect with that old friend.
So, in that spirit, this time 7 years ago, I was in Hong Kong for the first time. More specifically – Hong Kong Disney. I was most excited about it. And let me clarify, I wasn’t 8. I was 18. HK Disney has the proud accolade of being the smallest of all the Disney Parks and they even had a special Disney train (with Mickey-shaped windows). It had all the normal gimmicks and trimmings afforded to the ‘happiest place on earth.’ If I’m honest, the rides were mediocre and the shows were kind of disappointing but after 6 weeks in communist China, I lapped up the commercialism of it all. Plus, hello Disney – who can resist?
